ATA Trap

Trapshooting is a shotgun shooting sport where a clay target is release from a trap house and that target flies away from the shooter. The typical trap target in practice is a single target, shot using a single shotgun shell. Up to 5 shooters may shoot in any round of Trap; the first shooter always leads each round of 5 targets.

Rules

For trap practice, each field is equipped with a microphone target calling system. The squad leader, or leader of the round, will approach the first position, and put the microphones in the ON position. Once on, any verbal noise will cause the system to launch a target. Please take care not to speak when on the trap field once the speakers are on; mis-launched targets will not be replaced. Additionally, take care when moving the microphone stands as this too can cause inadvertent target launches. When the round is complete, the squad leader has the responsibility to turn the microphones OFF.

All ATA and GGC rules are in effect during tournaments. Only ATA tournament officials may stop shooting during an ATA tournament.

Trap can be shot with any shotgun in a gauge from 12 gauge down to the .410 bore.

Ear and Eye protection forward of the fence barricade are required. Range Safety Officers may stop any shooting activities and request each shooter to wear this protection. If you don’t have it, you may purchase ear plugs in the clubhouse. Refusal to wear this protection violates the Rules and Regulations of the Club and the shooter will be asked to leave the GGC.

Only shells with shot size 7 ½, 8 or 9’s can be used on the fields and on the patterning board. Please, no hunting loads with shot size 6, 4, 2, BB or buckshot.

Do not load more than one shell for single targets; two for doubles.

All Shotgun specific rules can be found posted in the clubhouse and posted on the bulletin board.

Cost

Greenville Gun Club uses the Promatic card system. Cards can be purchased from the Vending machine at the main club house. Current cost is $20.00 for 125 targets which will equal 5 rounds of Trap/Skeet and 5-Stand.

Schedule

The trap fields are open year-long Sat & Sun 12PM to 5PM, Sept to May Wed 12PM to 5PM, June to Aug Thursday 12PM to 5PM. GGC reserves the right to close earlier depending on attendance.

Practice availability is impacted when Trap holds registered tournaments. Effectively, all fields are closed to practice when Trap holds their monthly ATA tournament. Please review the Events calendar to determine when those tournaments are held so you are not disappointed when coming to the ranges for practice.

GGC hosts monthly registered ATA tournament shoots from September thru April. These shoots are open to any ATA registered individual whether GGC member or not. ATA membership applications available at shoots. ATA shoots maybe 100 singles, 100 handicap, 50 pair of doubles, or Big 50 style shoot which is 50 targets of singles, handicap and doubles. The ATA trap programs are subject to change by the GGC trap director. It is advised to contact the director and request to be added to the Trap Program email list. Send an email to trap@gvlgunclub.com and request to be added. Tournament fees and shoot information are stated on the email program. Tournament shoot dates are listed on the GGC Events Calendar section and Trap and Field magazine.
