100 Yard Pistol Caliber Rifle Match

Competition Details

Buffalo Rifle is a sport harkening back to the latter half of the 19th century when vast herds of buffalo (American Bison) covered the western plains. In these matches we strive to bring back the marksmanship of those days using similar rifles and cartridges.

Course of Fire – Pistol Caliber Rifles – 100 Yards:

  • We shoot two relays of 15 shots each for a total of 30 shots for record.
  • 5 shots each at three same size steel targets at 100 yards.
  • All competitors have an opportunity for a sighting in period before their relay.

Course of Fire – Traditional Buffalo Rifle Calibers – 200 & 300 Yards:

  • We shoot two relays of 15 shots each for a total of 30 shots for record.
  • 5 shots each at three different size steel targets at 200 and 300 yards.
  • All competitors have an opportunity for a sighting in period before their relay.

Rifles Permitted:

Any original or replica rifle that was in use prior to 1895 that originally fired a black powder cartridge. That can include lever actions or single shot.  We do accept the H&R Buffalo Classic as a valid rifle. The Ruger No. 1 rifle in the correct cartridge is also permitted.

For pistol caliber match, any lever or single shot action rifle firing an approved pistol caliber.

Ammunition Permitted:

Any caliber cartridges that were originally loaded with black powder. They can be loaded with black or smokeless powder. Bullets must be lead only, NO gas checks, plated or jacketed.

We suggest you bring 50 rounds as we have bonus targets and a cash prize shoot-off at the end of the match.

Sights:

Sights must be open, tang or receiver sights. Globe front sights with inserts are permitted.

Shooting Positions (any of the following):

  • Prone with or w/o sticks
  • Sitting with or w/o sticks
  • Standing with or w/o sticks
  • Other props may be brought and used at the shooter’s discretion with the approval of the Match Director.

Eye and Ear protection is required for all competitors and spectators.

Gate opens at 8:30 for registration and range set up.

Safety briefing at 9:45 – Shooting at 10:00.

$10.00 per shooter

Competition is open to GGC members, GGC member guests, and to the public.  Non-GGC members are restricted to this shooting competition only.
